An Unexpected Visitor
by Jane on Friday, 7th March 2008

Wren, Mr Bump and I were talking on the back step this afternoon, when we heard a voice talking in the jacaranda above us.

We looked up, and down swooped the most beautiful sulphur-crested cockatoo and perched near us on the wooden beam of our pergola. He (it’s usually only male birds who talk) strutted around chatting with us for a good 2 hours, following us as we moved around the yard.

In particular, he seemed to really enjoy watching the kids bouncing on the trampoline.

We’ve found that he had escaped from a yard behind ours, where he gets regular petting. He’s still hanging around so he should return home when he’s had enough freedom.

  1. Hi Jane,

That is a really neat photo. Where do you live with such nice wildlife? Or from the sounds of what you wrote, is this guy a pet who went for a “flight”?

We used to have a porcupine walk through our yard regularly in the evenings, before we moved across town. It was sort of fun to talk with him as he ambled by… he never talked back to us though.

Thanks for stopping in to my blog today. I’m going to try out your play dough recipe this week with my kids - I think it will be fun!

  2. Hi Brett,

Thanks for visiting. We’re in Sydney Australia, so the cockatoo is a native bird, but this one was definitely used to being cared for.

Porcupines are native to North America, aren’t they? I’m not sure where we’d find talking ones, although my kids could probably come up with a good suggestion or two.

Let me know how you go with the play dough recipe!
