School Holiday Sanity
On the subject of entertaining the kids over the holidays, I bet I would have had no problems if they had one of these to play in.
But, since they don’t, I’ve come up with a list of great FREE things to do with the kids in order to keep myself sane.
- Collecting walks ~ firewood, stones, pinecones, leaves, flowers. If we have to walk slowly, we might as well pick things up as we go.
- Bushwalking ~ more firewood, and lovely clean air to breathe. Hope it’s fine this weekend.
- Visit a new park ~ should keep them occupied for an hour.
- Plant some new seedlings ~ we saved tomato seeds & planted them last holidays.
- Take some cuttings ~ to go with the daisy cuttings I took the other week.
- Camp out in the backyard ~ but only if it’s warm enough!
- Build a cubbyhouse with sheets ~ indoors, I can hang them from the bookcase or outdoors, peg them around the trampoline & put a plastic tablecloth on the ground.
- Visit the library ~ ours is just a short walk down the road, and they have story~time at least twice a week.
- Have a picnic ~ again, this depends on the rain holding off…
- Sibling sleepover ~ occasionally (after we’ve forgetten the dramas of the last time we let them do this), we let one of the kids sleepover in the other’s bedroom. Insane, I know, but they enjoy it and we are suckers.
- Sleepover at Granma’s ~ one child at bedtime is much easier than two. Granma is a sucker, too.
- Roast some chestnuts ~ I know it sounds weird for Autumn, but if it’s cold enough, we’ll be lighting the fireplace, and I have these chestnuts that just called out to me the other day in the supermarket. If it’s not cold enough, I don’t know what I’ll do with them… impulse buying is bad for the soul.
- Invite friends over to play ~ the good old failsafe to fall back on, especially Wren now has a friend who lives only 3 doors away.
What do you do to maintain sanity in school holidays?

In Melbourne Federation Square always has interesting and fun free things to do. We catch the train in and pack a picnic lunch and make a day of it.
