A Quick Lesson in Fursing
by Jane on Sunday, 22nd June 2008

I have never been a big swearer, but when Wren came along seven and a half years ago, it was like going back to primary school.

That’s elementary school for the US audience.

I had to learn to furse all over again.

Fursing is fake cursing, in case you didn’t know. It’s a well known term, invented by me, just now.

Examples include: Sugar! Frig! Buggerigah! (with the gg pronounced the way it shouldn’t)

I also invented new forms of fursing, such as “bu~ottom”, and “fridge”.

And I thought I was doing so well, until Wren was 18mths old and dropped a crust from her highchair.

“Damn!”

That was my angelic little um, angel. Her sweet, innocent lips had uttered their first profanity, and I knew it was my own special gift that I had passed on to her.

It’s a continuing struggle. I was soooo proud of myself when she came home from school last year and asked what effyouseekay spells.

Proud because she hadn’t heard it from me.

I was especially proud of her, too. You see, she’d read it on the school wall.

Gifted. That’s my daughter.

So I’m teaching her to furse, too.

  4. Yes, we furse at my house too. We’re not proud of it. But we do it. While I would never use my Lord’s name in vain, I’ve been known to yell out, “Cheese ‘n rice!” or “Hot dang it!” Or I’ve called something “that Flippin’ thingamajig.” Unfortunately by the 5th grade my kids have learned that the “f” word does not refer to “flippin’” Yes, they read it on the wall. We also were proud of their GT abilities.

  7. Fursing! I love it! I do it, I just never had a name for it, that’s great!

My daughter uttered her first curse word in public, “dammit”, right in the middle of the realtor’s office when she was 3. My husband and I both looked right at each other and each blamed the other! :-D

  8. Sounds like I’m not alone in my gift, ladies ;)
~And the ability to pass it on to descendants.

    @Kenyatta ~ A how~to, what a great idea!
And there’s a few interesting examples of fursing here.
I could hold a comp for most unusual furse….

@Leslie ~ Thanks for the other furse words. We could do with some more around here when we feel like getting creative. ;)
And thank you for adding me to your blogroll, I appreciate it. :)

  9. Thank you for teaching me a new word today! :D Come to think of it, I use lots of furse words around here. Thankfully I haven’t heard any real or fake cussing out of my kids’ mouths yet, but my 3 yr old has the ears of an elephant and I just know one of these days she’s gonna hear me say something and repeat it back to me in front of tens of people we know. :D

  10. Furse huh, I may have to ‘borrow’ that one. We like to gloss over our ‘words’ too - shitenhausen, shizlick, fruit tingles, fudge - mmmm, I can’t remember the others off the top of my head now

It is definitely something that we do in our house (lots of ‘by jingo’ and ‘fried eggs’!) and I even remember my mum saying the word ’shi-ver’s’ a lot when I was growing up!! :)

My fave is oh nuts! you figure it out!

  13. I better start fursing if my little parrots start repeating what they over ehar I am in big trouble - what the ‘fridge’

  14. yeah, I was so embarrassed when my 3 yo said to me, after a particularly trying time of getting out of the house, “Let’s get going to this frickin’ party.” I don’t like to hear my attitude come back to me even in the form of fursing!

But it did make a good tale to tell at the party–and ever since.

  17. Our son’s only ten weeks old but just in case baby-memory has some ridiculously overdeveloped ability to absorb cursing-’n'-cussing, we’re already tip-toeing about - verbally speaking - in his presence. Yep, we were fursing without knowing (until now) the technical term.
