Puff Paint Recipe
by Jane on Monday, 30th June 2008

I’ve had this recipe for a few years and haven’t actually tried it until now because Wren & Mr Bump have such sensitive skin.

Then it suddenly occurred to me that they don’t have to lather their hands with it.
We actually have some paintbushes in the house!

What a great idea: Painting with paintbrushes. D’oh.

Okay, so I’m not exactly painting with a full palette at the moment.

You will need:

  • PVC glue
  • Shaving Cream
  • Food coloring
  • Paint brushes.

What to do:

Put some pvc glue into a small container and add shaving cream.

Mix gently until the consistency is thick and even. Your mixture needs to be thick but still puffy.
Does that make sense?

Add some more food colouring for stronger colours. Make all sorts of different colors in separate containers.

Paint thickly to create puffy artworks and allow to dry.

Other thoughts:

  • Jazz it up by adding a bit of fine glitter.
  • Use a black permanent marker to draw a picture that has large areas to fill in.

By the way, Wren wanted me to say a huge “thank you” to everyone who said “get well soon”.

~She’s back on track and arguing with her brother again.

Life is back to normal, thank goodness. ;)

  1. Cool idea. I’ve never heard of making your own puff paint. This is a good activity for rainy summer days when we can’t go outside. I’ll have to go get some PVC glue from the hardware store.

  2. This is always great fun! When I taught we used shaving cream and regular “school” glue. Some of the teachers would mix in paint when they wanted bright colors. Did you know if it is humid outside they will take a little longer to dry. I didn’t and hung some puffy ocean creatures on my classroom wall…they ran EVERYWHERE!
I haven’t thought about that recipe since having my kids. I think we might make our annual fireworks pictures puffy this year. Thanks for sharing!

    Glad Wren is feeling better.

  5. @Erin ~ How awful!
Although the mental image of multicoloured slime oozing down the walls made me laugh. :D
How did your students react? And did it stain the walls??

@ Chris ~ Clean up’s easy. Just add water :)
Especially good in summer, as you can do it outside and hose off any spills.
~ Hose the kids too, while you’re at it! :D

  6. Oooh, glad she is back to fighting with her brother! Well, kind of. :-)

I have finally put my prize to really good use on my blog. I’m so excited! See you soon!
