Thomas “Train Track” Cake

For Mr Bump’s third birthday last year, he wanted a Thomas the tank engine “train track cake” with blue icing. This is the result.

When it was time to sing ‘happy birthday’, I put his wooden Thomas train at the side of the cake and three train-shaped candles on the cake.

It was a big hit!

I’ve included a couple of pictures to show how it was done, for anyone wanting to create something similar.

Adding the tracksAfter finishing the blue icing, I began adding the train tracks.

Instead of icing bags, I cut the corner off a sandwich bag and held it with a face washer to stop my hands heating the icing. Then the yellow rails went on next.

To create the number three, I made a grease-proof paper stencil. This was to stop me making a mess by dropping pieces of ‘coal’ everywhere, and to make sure the number was neatly written.

Greaseproof paper cake stencilTo make the coal, I cut up liquorice into small pieces, but you could use tiny chocolate chips, too.

Adding the coal was fiddly, but it was oddly satisfying making sure the pieces covered the area evenly. I then also scattered coal along the train tracks, to get the finished result.
