Polly Pocket Cake

Wren was really into Polly Pocket the year before last and so I tried my hand at making a Polly cake for her 6th birthday. I didn’t think to take pictures to show how I created the design, so if you have any questions, please do ask.

I used a similar technique as in the Thomas cake, making a grease proof paper stencil of the picture. I traced the picture from one of Wren’s posters.

~ Okay, one day I’ll have to actually show photos of the technique.

Next time we have a birthday, it’s a promise. :)

First, I cut out the entire head and laid it onto the un-iced cake and put on the pink “background” icing.

Then, I removed the paper with a skewer, tidied up the edges and cut around the hairline. Laid the face back into the gap where it fit and iced the hair in lemon.

Thirdly, I removed the paper again with the skewer, tidied up the edges and filled in the face with a skin-colour icing.

The outlines and pink of her lips were done with tubes of a gel-type icing product that I bought to try.

As you can see, it didn’t work the best and smudged near her left eye. Normal piped icing could have been cleaned up, but this product was extremely fiddly, and I won’t be using it again.

Finally, I thought the background was quite plain, so I added swirls like in the poster.

To be honest, I wasn’t really happy with the results on this one. The colours came out looking a bit insipid and the outlines weren’t very neat.

But the important thing is what Wren thought, and she loved it. So, as long as the ‘customer’ was happy, it was a job well done!
