What’s a Girl To Do?
Last night was just the worst night for blogging.
I’ve been putting off upgrading Wordpress to the next version for a few weeks, but put it down to being too focused on writing for my blog.
Turns out that it may have been a premonition.
Tonight I decided to bite the bullet and just do it, as Nike say. I backed up the appropriate files, made a copy of the theme I’m using and followed all the instructions ~ or so I thought.
Unfortunately, something went wrong somewhere, because suddenly the whole shebang was suddenly returning a 500 error. Or something. And I was stuffed.
Up the proverbial creek without a paddle and drifting towards the waterfall. Where there were sharp rocks and I would definitely end up in the, er… water.
Naturally, it was the Sunday evening of a long weekend, and my wonderful hosting people were unavailable on their 7~days~a~week, 9am~to~midnight phone support, even though it was only half past nine in the evening.
Their online support desk appeared to have been completely abandoned for the long weekend, as well.
Am I the only person in the entire world who does not go away for an overpriced, oversexed orgy on a long weekend?
So what’s the sensible thing to do? Turn the computer off and wait for clearer heads to solve the problem in the morning?
Of course not. I tinkered. I tried removing the whole thing with Fantastico, but no luck.
And then I thought: “Ahah! I can delete all those pestilential files manually from my server and then ftp the proper ones back up there.”
I knew it would screw up my webhost’s records, but at this stage of the game I was prepared to make as much work for them as I had to in order to get my beautiful blog back online.
Let them clean up the mess come Tuesday.
It’s not as if it would make things any worse for me, now would it?
Yes, I was feeling nasty.
But I guess you can tell the outcome just because you’re reading this. It worked!
I guess sometimes it pays not to take the ’sensible’ route.
Being impulsive can be really effective…
Although if you do notice anything odder than usual, could you pleeeese email me to let me know???
So tell me, what was the last thing that you stuffed up?
And then ended up fixing by breaking “the sensible rule”?
